"Conceptualizing Community: Anthropological Reflections"
by: Ann Grodzins Gold, Syracuse University (2005)
Published on: 8/1/2005

In this essay, designed to contribute to the project on "Research Ethics and Environmental Health," I explore the concept of community particularly from an anthropological and social scientific perspective. As our broader project already has numerous case studies focussed on community partnerships for research and on community activism, my aim here is to step back and consider the meanings and uses of the term community, both past and present. These include the ways notions of community have been formulated, idealized and critiqued.
